Squirrel Chewing Examples
Last week’s blog was titled “Squirrels vs. Aluminum” . In that piece we wrote about the amazing chewing ability of squirrels. Please be sure to clink on the link if you missed it.
This week we continue with the same theme and give a few more video examples of how destructive squirrels can be.
The first video shows a squirrel that didn’t want to just get through a wooden attic vent– it wanted to DESTROY the vent for some reason. While many squirrels chew just enough to make an opening and let it go at that, this squirrel seemed to be chewing just for the fun. Maybe it wants to start a toothpick factory.
This much destruction called for a removal of the seemingly angry squirrel as well as a repair.
The repair in this case consisted of:
- removing the damaged wooden louvers
- replacing the insect screen with a hole in it
- replacing the old louvers with custom bent aluminum louvers
- installing a heavy gauge steel screen over the vent
This repair will keep squirrels, raccoons, bats, and birds out this attic.
We reiterate that rather than just make this repair, squirrel removal is highly advised. If the squirrel was intent on getting in, it would probably just move to a different area and start chewing once again. Trapping resets the home to “animal-free”. Repair prevents future problems.
Do Squirrels Chew Through Plastic?
The second video shows more squirrel destruction done just for the sake of chewing. In this case, the material chewed was plastic from the plumbing drain pipe vent. Yes, squirrels will chew on plastic for some reason. Again, we’re not sure why. But, as you can see from the video, when the squirrels take a liking to it they chew it up.
Ryan Impressed by Squirrel Chewing
The last example we show today is one that impressed Ryan – and that’s saying a lot.
Honestly, he sees a lot of squirrel chewing. But, as you can see in the video, he is genuinely impressed with the size and location of this squirrel’s hole.
As you can tell from the paint, this is not a new problem. Perhaps, even generations of squirrels have been using this entry into the walls.
Putting new wood here without squirrel removal would only beg new damage.
