Construction Problems Lead to Squirrels
Squirrels happen. But, why?
As is often the case, squirrels get into clients’ homes because they are given an advantage or opportunity to get in.
These opportunities often arise through some misstep in the construction process like a short cut, the use of sub-standard materials or poor design.
Squirrels also take advantage of missed maintenance like roof repairs delayed too long.
The bottom line is this: Squirrels don’t need all that much help from humans to get into our homes. But, we often give them a lot more help than we are aware or they deserve.
Today’s blog post looks at a couple of recent jobs where opportunity existed for squirrels and they took advantage.
We share descriptions and a couple of videos. Please, read on.
Problem Brick Leads to Squirrels
Our first case of squirrels getting into a house profiled today happened because of a brick problem.
Right at the roof line, where the chimney meets the roof, the brick is crumbling.
It may be a flashing/water issue or maybe the mortar is just too old. But, however it came to be, a gap in the brick opened up and a squirrel found it.
Once through the hole, the squirrel has found room to roam and decided this was a great entrance.
The squirrel did some chewing above to make the entrance hole awesome and now a problem is really established.
It is a great example of a construction fail causing a squirrel problem.

Signs of Squirrels Reveal More Construction-Caused Opportunity
Our second example also shows squirrels taking advantage of a human provided opportunity.
In this case, there was a gap left between the fascia trim and the roof decking.
This gap caught the attention of a squirrel and presented an attic opening with just a little more chewing.
Squirrels don’t need these types of advantages. But, when they find them, you can bet squirrels will move in.
Take a look:
A good question is, “Why did this gap exist in the first place?”
The answer seems to be that poor workmanship is to blame here.
As you see, the gap between the trim and roof is not visible from the ground. So, whoever did it probably thought it was “good enough”.
What we find time and time again is that a lot of construction practices that are “good enough” turn into animal issues over time.
