No Vacancy Raccoons

The roadside motel on iconic Route 66 has just sold its last room.

The night clerk flips a switch and the neon “NO” is illuminated in front of the word “Vacancy”.

Now other late-night travelers looking for a bed don’t waste time pulling off the highway here.  There are other motels up the road and they’ll just have to try one of those.

If only raccoons were familiar with this slice of Americana and keeping them away was as easy as putting up a sign!

Instead, today’s post points out the attraction between raccoons and vacant structures.

Raccoons Appreciate Seclusion & Disrepair

Vacant structures are magnets for raccoons and other nuisance wildlife. This is because:

  • They offer nuisance animals privacy from humans
  • Vacant structures have higher levels of disrepair
  • Small problems become larger because no one notices

Removed shingles and raccoon holeFor those of you who own vacant property or are thinking about buying a fixer-upper that’s been vacant awhile, we offer that the longer a building has been vacant, the more likelihood there is for nuisance wildlife to be a problem.

For those of you living in neighborhoods with vacant buildings, add raccoons to list when you engage your councilperson or building department representative when you advocate for action.

Vacant structures become playgrounds for raccoons as they give good shelter and are not harassed or scared by humans.  The more time they spend on a structure, the more likely they are to find a way in or cause damage.

As this video shows, a house that sits vacant can give raccoons plenty of opportunity to get in.  And once established in a given area, they tend to keep their numbers up.
