Squirrels, Raccoons, Bats, Bees, Moles, Groundhogs & Skunks…Phew!

A bonus of working in the nuisance animal control industry is the variety of work encountered.

This past week, all kinds of animals presented their unique challenges to homeowners and us.  Take a look at this picture heavy post.

Canton Pest SquirrelsGray, Black, and Red Squirrels

Did you know that black squirrels are really just a variant of gray squirrels, not a different species?  It used to be a common genetic trait in the Kent, OH area that made Kent’s squirrels unique.  Over the years, those genes have spread all over the Summit / Stark / Portage county area.

red squirrel trappingThis above picture shows a black variant gray squirrel captured with its litter mates.  Born this spring from the same mother, they were all living inside this home’s attic space.

To the right is the pesky red squirrel, known by some as a piney squirrel.  As you can see from the grey squirrel’s tail next to this one, the red squirrel is small in stature.

Bat guano clean up What Does Bat Guano Look Like?

Bat removal calls are often initiated by homeowner’s when they find bat poop or guano in their attics or living spaces.

pile of bat poopBat control is a change of pace because we don’t actually trap the bats or remove them with traps.  The resolution of bat problems is about letting them out of a structure but not back in.  Click on either of these pictures for a closer view of what bat guano looks like.

Honey Bee SwarmHoneybee Removal is a Bonus

Ryan loves his bees!  So when we get a call for honeybee removal, it is a welcome one for sure.

This is what a honeybee swarm looks like.  The bees are enticed into a box and they go home with our beekeeper, Ryan.

racoon removal and trapping           Raccoon Removal Still in High Gear

Removal of raccoons from attics, chimneys and walls continues.  The late breeders are still giving birth and many of the babies born in May are out and about.

While all raccoon removal scenarios are similar in many ways.  Each trapping scenario calls for a fresh perspective on the most efficient way to solve the problem.20140503_140836

Honestly, some raccoons are much bigger challenges than others.  It is the difficult raccoon that tests the skill of the raccoon trapper.  Often, persistence on the part of the trapper and a change of tactics usually get the job done.

Groundhogs, Skunks, and Moles

Groundhogs, skunks, and moles round off an interesting and varied week.

Trapped GroundhogLots of homeowners are starting to see their gardens and flowers getting munched on by groundhogs.  Babies are starting to be visible outside of dens.  The spike in population this time of year will lead to more woodchuck / human conflicts.  Is your shed or deck prepared to battle a groundhog invasion?

Mole in trapMoles, like the one to the right, are still damaging lawns.  This one’s tunneling in this well maintained /landscaped home was stopped by a well placed mole trap.

Skunk in live trapSkunks are always on the prowl.  And while we didn’t catch this one, we received the call to get it out of a trap.  You can imagine that getting a skunk out of a trap is quite different than getting a groundhog out of a trap.  But, for what it’s worth, skunks generally smell a lot better than groundhogs…unless of course they spray.
