Raccoons & Wet Roofs

Why do raccoons happen?

This is a question we often address in  our posts and today we offer another video example.

Raccoons are often the result of weak roofs.  Roofs that are weakened because of long-term water damage are one of the top causes of raccoon interest in a particular roof.

This week, we have a video which shows one of the wettest, greenest roofs we’ve come across.

And because the roof stays moist all the time, the decking is starting to disintegrate and holes are opening up.

Raccoons have found favorable conditions on and around this roof and use it as a great place.  They have holes into the roof and a great chimney to use.

You can see that a new roof is necessary.  Raccoons are just a symptom of the real problem–the wet roof.

Raccoons love this roof.  You’ll see why…

As nuisance animal removers, we are obviously called about problematic nuisance animals.

But as you can see in this video, the real problem is the roof.  Always in the shade and with a low pitch, moss loves to grow on this roof.

As time went by, other plants started to grow on it (Poison Ivy !!!!) and raccoons fertilized it all.  The roof really looks like the forest floor in places.

Asphalt shingles are good at keeping water out, but can only handle so much.  This is too much.

The raccoons are just a symptom of a bigger problem.

Removing Raccoons is Start

We understand that calling nuisance raccoons in the attic a symptom rather than the problem is a case of semantics.  Most homeowners just want the raccoons gone!

But, considering raccoons as symptoms helps us get to real solutions for raccoons and other nuisance animals.

And, solutions for nuisance animal problems is what we’re all about!

Raccoon removal is a good first step because they are calling the attic home.  But, getting the holes in the roof fixed (in the short term) and the whole roof replaced (the long-term) are what’s really going to fix this issue.

Reducing the amount of shade this roof is in will also help.  Low pitched, shaded roofs can also be aided by moss control products (Moss doesn’t like Zinc).

We can capture raccoons.  But, we need to make sure that the homeowner understands the extent of the roof problems.

Offering Solutions for Animal & Structural Issues

two Juvenile Raccoons in One TrapIn this and many other cases, merely getting rid of the nuisance animals will often not provide a long term solution if the real problem is not fixed.

That is the point we really want to make for those experiencing a nuisance wildlife issue.

We believe it is best practice to address any nuisance animal issue in its entirety.

That is why the actual removing of nuisance wild animals is often only half of the battle (or less!).

Therefore, we believe it is best practice to address any nuisance animal issue in its entirety.

Even though repair/prevention work doesn’t always get top billing, it is one of the most vital parts of achieving long term solutions for nuisance animal problems.
