Squirrels Have Recently Been Born
Ever wonder when squirrels are born are in Ohio?
Here in the Akron, Canton, Kent area of northeast Ohio, the first round of squirrel births is just coming to a close with many February and March births.
We say “first round” because squirrels give birth twice a year; with the second litters being born in July/August.
So right now, there are lots of undeveloped squirrels tucked away in nests all over Summit, Stark, and Portage counties.
Here are some which were in a tree that was cut down in the last week of March and were taken to a rehabilitator.
Their eyes are not open and there is not much fur growth yet. These squirrels don’t do much during this stage of development.
The squirrels born in the last two months are all in different stages of development with some farther along than others.
Still, it is safe to say that none of these newly born squirrels has ventured out of the nest quite yet: biologists tell us it takes about 10 weeks before they do that.
Fittingly, chances are good that unless a homeowner has spotted the entry point a mother squirrel has made, he or she is still none the wiser that a litter of squirrels is present.
A lone female squirrel is usually pretty stealthy. She may have a nest entrance somewhere into a home and the homeowners don’t even realize she’s there. Out of sight (and hearing) …out of mind.
As we transition from March into April, not being aware of a family of squirrels becomes much more difficult.
For even though they are born hairless and with their eyes closed, baby squirrels develop quickly and will soon start to make noises and movements. It is these noises and movements that let the homeowner know there is indeed a squirrel problem.
