Winter Nuisance Animal Removal

Heavy snowfalls.  Then, a polar vortex.  In the forecast, a warm-up.  Ahh, the challenge of nuisance animal removal in the winter.

Here in the Akron, Canton, Kent area the winter of 2018-2019 hasn’t been too bad.  Only lately have we been hit with a lot of snow and then crazy cold.

Despite good weather or bad weather, squirrels and raccoons stay busy throughout the winter.  Therefore, Frontline Animal Removal tries to stay fairly busy too.

For us, winter brings unique challenges and opportunities.

This post will show some of both in a number of videos.  Bundle up and enjoy!

Snow Trail Opportunities

The biggest advantage winter brings to nuisance animal removal is the ability to easily track animals through the snow.

Fresh snow and fresh tracks make identifying travel patterns, type of animal and hole location very simple.

Tracks in the snow is like having a treasure map with a big red X.

These trails both led straight to animals in traps.  Seems pretty simple doesn’t it?  And while we can often figure out travel paths without snow, it’s also fun to follow tracks.

Up next is an example where having some tracks in the snow actually helped a great deal; it helped Ryan identify he was dealing with squirrels rather than a raccoon.

The snow in this case, while a pain, was a real time saver.  Had it not been for the tracks in the snow, the bent soffit evidence would have begged for a raccoon trap and the squirrel trapping would have been delayed.

Disadvantage of Snow Trapping

Having pointed out some positives of snow, we move on to the plain truth that heavy doses of winter can really cripple nuisance animal removal.  Sometimes, it makes it impossible to work.

A lot of nuisance animal removal is done on and around roofs and roof edges.  Because of this it is impossible to get to a lot of spots where animals could be getting in.  Inspecting and trapping and repair work on snow covered, icy surfaces is just not practical.

Sometimes we can continue to remove squirrels and raccoons through the winter, but sometimes we can’t.  That makes the winter a little slower and a little leaner.
