Errors Lead to Continued Raccoons
In the world of nuisance wildlife removal, every job presents its unique challenges and learning opportunities. Today, we’re diving into a recent case handled by Frontline Animal Removal, shedding light on the importance of strategic trapping techniques and thorough inspections.
Ryan went to a raccoon job recently and found two things that let this raccoon problem continue. The first was a construction error that let raccoons and other critters free reign. The second problem he noted was an unsuccessful previous trapping attempt using inefficient tactics.
Read on and watch the video. If you have a raccoon problem at your house, this post will give you a few important things to consider and steer you in good direction.
The Raccoon Problem
Frontline Animal Removal was recently called for a raccoon that was in the attic.
When Ryan showed up to see what was going on he asked questions and performed an inspection. Part of this inspection involved setting up a ladder and getting on the roof.
Getting on the roof (or, more safely, you getting someone to get on the roof) is one of the key points we highlighting. Without getting on the roof to look around when there is a suspected high entrance, causes and trapping and lasting solutions are less-often realized.
At this house Ryan found a wide-open soffit that needs repaired–NOT VISIBLE FROM THE GROUND. It looks like the contractor just sort of neglected the area and left it alone not considering how inviting an opportunity it is for nuisance wildlife. That was mistake one for this homeowner.
Mistake two was calling a critter removal company that did not get on the roof to look around and set a trap on the ground where the raccoon was climbing up. In this case, the trap-smart raccoon by-passed the trap and kept doing its thing. And even if the raccoon was captured, would the problem have been solved long-term with the gaping hole up on the backside of the soffit?
Ryan recognized the flaw in this approach. He knows the inspection needs to be thorough and to look for damage and openings as much as animal sign. He also realizes that the most efficient way to capture raccoons is to trap them where they enter and exit the structure. This is often accomplished through positive sets that are indeed, ON THE ROOF.

To make abundantly clear what we mean, take a look yourself as Ryan shows and explains what he found.
As you were able to see, Ryan climbed onto the roof to get a closer look at the entry point and quickly identified the vulnerable soffit that had been improperly sealed. He also realized that placing the trap directly over the raccoon’s access point, was the most efficient way to capture this raccoon, especially since it had already proven to be a trap-avoided.
After a creative set, the raccoon was quickly captured. Another trap placed where that one was proved nothing else was going in or out. And, finally, with the raccoon gone and the underlying problem identified the homeowner could knowledgeably proceed on what could be done to the soffit to prevent further issues.
Here is the raccoon-proof repair Ryan made.

This case serves as a valuable reminder of two essential lessons in wildlife removal:
- Contractors May Make Mistakes When Sealing Buildings: Despite best efforts, buildings often harbor unnoticed vulnerabilities that wildlife exploit. In this instance, a poorly sealed soffit provided easy access for the raccoon. Regular inspections by trained professionals can identify and rectify such issues before they escalate.
- The Importance of Rooftop Assessment and Trapping: Climbing onto the roof allows for a comprehensive understanding of the situation. By setting traps at the entrance point on the roof, wildlife removal experts can intercept intruders more effectively, minimizing the risk of prolonged infestations.
