Raccoon Caught Exiting Soffit
Pictured below is a favorite attic/soffit entry point for raccoons. As you can see, an overhang area (where two roof lines come together) is a raccoon favorite. Raccoons are great at exploiting this common structural design. They simply use the lower roof as an extremely stable base to reach up and rip down the soffit. They are left with a mostly discreet entrance protected from the elements. Once in the soffit, they sometimes have the ability to then access even cozier voids or attic spaces.
Raccoons Removed from Soffit/Attic in Stark, Summit, and Portage Counties (Ohio)
Trapping these raccoons is about:
- finding the access
- giving them one way to get out (into the trap)
Notice from the picture that wire was placed enclosing the trap entrance (behind the towels). This blocking directs the raccoon to the back of the trap. Here a one way door trap was used because we knew the raccoon was at home. A two way door trap can also be utilized to catch them coming or going.
Tips for do-it-yourselfers:
- make sure your trap is secured to the roof so the trap with the raccoon in it doesn’t tumble off or slide down the roof
- we highly recommend a board under the trap for securing purposes and protecting the shingles from raccoon hands and poop
Once the raccoon(s) is removed, repair to the soffit is accomplished. A stout repair will prevent re-entry from another raccoon next year.
Hopefully, this short post has been a confidence builder for you DIY raccoon removers out there. A picture is indeed worth a thousand words. Be safe on the roof and employ the right tools. It should be no problem.
