The Essential Combination for Effective Squirrel Removal

There is a squirrel problem.  What is the best way to deal with it?

There are different opinions out there as to the best way to go about solving a squirrel problem.

  • Should the squirrels simply be evicted and expected not to return?
  • Should the offenders be trapped and removed from the equation?

In this post, we are going to share what squirrels have shown us is the most effective long-term removal strategy.

We have a couple of videos you’ll want to see further down the page.  Don’t miss them.

Experience Shows Squirrel Removal/Trapping is Needed

There are a number of sources on dealing with nuisance squirrels which advise those with a squirrel problem to block off the squirrels’ entrance point in order to solve the problem.  Those who practice this method believe letting the squirrels out and shoring up possible entry points is enough.

Here is our warning:

Just blocking squirrels is most often not effective and leads to new damage.

What we’ve found many times is that squirrels who get shut out of a home just find another way in and cause more damage in the process.

In fact, thinking we can keep them out when they really, really want in doesn’t give them near enough credit.

We believe that REMOVAL prior to the sealing up process is very important.  This takes the conditioned squirrels (often a generational problem) out of the mix.  This gives the repair/exclusion of the entry point a much higher likelihood of preventing a reoccupation by squirrels.

The Problem with Exclusion Alone

At Frontline Animal Removal, we’ve encountered numerous cases where simply excluding squirrels from a structure proves to be a temporary and incomplete solution.

Squirrels, much like any other creature, don’t take kindly to being evicted from their homes. In fact, they’re known to be persistent and resourceful when it comes to finding their way back inside.

To illustrate this point, we have this recent video that demonstrates the aftermath of excluding squirrels without trapping them first. The exclusion might seem successful initially, but the determined squirrels will resort to causing new damage to regain access to their familiar habitat. This video serves as a powerful reminder that exclusion alone is often not enough.

The Frontline Animal Removal Approach

Our experience has led us to advocate a comprehensive strategy that involves both trapping and repairs.

Trapping the offending squirrels prior to making structural repairs ensures that the root of the problem is addressed. By removing the squirrels from the equation, we eliminate the risk of them causing additional damage in their attempts to re-enter the premises.

Trapping and removal are integral components of an effective wildlife control strategy. Without trapping, repairs may be rendered futile as squirrels persistently attempt to regain entry. Conversely, without proper repairs, trapping alone may not prevent a recurrence of the issue.

Though some sources suggest using one-way doors to let squirrels out before making repairs will work, we caution against it. We don’t doubt it has worked in some instances.  We also know that it hasn’t worked in many cases like the one shown in the video above.

Here is an older example at a squirrel job where the same point is made.

Our real-world experiences highlight the limitations of this approach and emphasize the importance of a more proactive strategy.
