Water Rotted Soffits & Squirrels

Frontline Animal Removal recently tackled a squirrel removal job that highlights a theme we see over and over:

Nuisance Animals Love to Take Advantage of Water-Weakened Areas!

In this week’s post we’ll explore the idea of opportunistic nuisance animals (in this case squirrels) taking advantage of a water-damaged structure yet again.

This time the root cause of the problem is a wide chimney and flashing issues.  In the explanatory video, Ryan will show you this issue and talk about solutions.  He’ll point out that the squirrels are just a symptom of a bigger problem-the uncontrolled water.

Rotted Wood Soffit Attracts Squirrels

As you’ll see in the video below, the soffits the squirrels penetrated at this house are on either side of a wide chimney.  And because there is a problem with water drainage at the chimney, the soffits there stay very wet.

Wood that stays wet and deteriorates attracts animals.

It’s something we see all the time and the real cautionary point we want readers to consider.

Take a look:

As you saw, squirrels in the soffit is an issue and its an issue Frontline Animal Removal can take care of by trapping the squirrels.

But you also saw the greater issue that set this all in motion: the problem with the water draining around the chimney.

Water is public enemy number one for a home’s exterior and general construction practices reflect this fact.  That’s why it’s covered, caulked, and treated.  It’s also why we have pitched roofs, gutters, and downspouts.

But mistakes controlling water happen.

When they do, the symptomatic squirrels need removed but the cause -on-going water issue) also needs fixed.  Otherwise, squirrels or other animals will return.

A Solution for This Squirrel Problem

The first step to really solve this squirrel problem is to remove the squirrels currently using this soffit area.  That was accomplished.

Beyond that, the ultimate solution lies in addressing the water issue at its source.

When finding issues, the Frontline Animal Removal team will recommend a comprehensive approach.

In this case Ryan let the owners know of the issues with the chimney, flashing, and soffit.  What happens from there is up to the owner as repairs account for additional costs.  Often we can remove the animals and make a repair.  But, its up to owner to proceed as they see fit.  We just want to make sure they see the root cause of the issue.

In this case, suggestions include:

  1. Chimney Repair: The width of the chimney is a contributing factor to water accumulation. Consider adding a saddle (sometimes referred to as chimney cricket) to minimize water retention.  Here are two links you may find helpful:  Chimney Saddle: 8 Facts & Roof Cricket Recommended
  2. Flashing Replacement: Installing new, durable flashing is crucial in preventing water intrusion. Quality flashing creates a barrier that protects the vulnerable areas of the roof and soffit.
  3. Soffit Replacement: After resolving the water issue, it’s essential to replace the rotted soffit with new, sturdy materials to restore the home’s integrity and aesthetics.
