Our Favorite Raccoon Trap

A great raccoon trap is any trap that catches the intended target raccoon.  It’s all about results, right?

And while we realize that there are many raccoon traps on the market, people often ask us what is the best raccoon trap.  What a loaded term!  They want more specifics than the opening sentence here.

So, for what it’s worth, a raccoon trap made by Comstock Custom Cages is our favorite raccoon trap.

Please know we own many different brands and styles of raccoon traps.  They all have their time and place.  We (and you) can catch raccoons with them.  But, day in and day out, the Comstock Custom Cage is pretty hard to beat.

It’s advantages are:

  • their walk through / positive set design aids efficiency
  • they can be used horizontally, vertically, at an angle, and upside down
  • they are well built

In this post, we’ll show you how this type of raccoon trap is used and show videos of its effective operations.

Before we do that, please know that we aren’t sponsored by, have nothing to gain financially, get no kickbacks, etc. for recommending this trap.   We just like the trap for the following reasons.

Positive Sets Aid Efficiency

For professional nuisance animal removers, trapping efficiency is important.  Patience may be a virtue but that doesn’t mean we’re better off if we wait for an animal to be caught.  We’d like to catch the problem animals as soon as possible.  Customers also like the problems taken care of sooner rather than later.

To effect efficient trapping, we often employ positive set trapping.  A positive set is one where a trap is set on a travel path, the animal’s movement is controlled, they walk right through the trap in order to move and are captured.  Putting a trap on the travel path of a nuisance animal just makes sense.  And, when you actually incorporate the trap into the travel path, viola, you’ve just made a positive set.  The Comstock Double Door Cage Trap Works great for this style of trapping.

Here is a picture example of where it could be used:

It’s not difficult to see how a raccoon was getting in here.  Whoever put this exhaust vent through this chimney chase and left that void should be given a talking to.  Animals are naturally attracted to openings like this.  That wire is just bent in there and is not going to be a challenge for a raccoon.

You could opt to set a trap near here and try to lure the animal in with bat but that is hit or miss.  A sure fire way to catch the raccoon is to make it walk through a trap the next time it wants in or out.

Traps are made specifically for chimneys and we use them.  But the chimney traps come in sizes that fit down inside standard flues.  This is just an oddly shaped opening.  With some wire and a Comstock trap, a very efficient set-up can be made that can do the job well, even considering the geography of the roof.

Here is Ryan’s efficient set utilizing a Comstock double door trap.

The raccoon only had one way to go and that was traveling through the trap.

Here is a closer look at the trap:

Video Examples of Positive Set Raccoon Jobs

We hope the description above makes sense and is a testament to the style of trap.  If not, here are a couple of videos which show the concept well.

As you saw, both of these animals were captured quickly because the trap was right in their travel path and they had to go through the trap.  The Comstock traps worked hanging upside down in both of these cases, displaying their versatility.  No bait was needed and the waiting game was very limited.

It really is a great raccoon trap because it is utilized in a positive set manner.
