Sonic Spikes & Groundhogs

This could be the shortest blog ever.

Sonic Devices (usually called sonic spikes) that are placed in the yard and give off sound waves to repel animals don’t work for groundhogs!

It’s that simple. Don’t waste your money.

Here is a video which illustrates the point well.

As you can see with three groundhogs being captured in very short order, this device did not seem to affect the groundhogs at all.

Trapping the groundhogs, on the other hand, was very effective.

Sonic Spikes Claim to Deter Burrowing Rodents

To be fair, the main animals the spikes claim to drive off are moles and gophers.  But, in most of the literature and advertising for the devices, they still claim to work on groundhogs/woodchucks.

To the right is a brand-redacted claim we found on the internet.

We urge you to be skeptical.  If 25 of 26 people found this helpful, that means 25 people people just got suckered.

Our experience has found that they don’t work too well for moles, but that is a different story.

We don’t know how they work on gopher because we don’t have gophers in Ohio.  Some people mistakenly refer to groundhogs or woodchucks as gophers, but they are not.   The pocket gopher is a burrowing animal that lives mainly west of the Mississippi.  They are significantly smaller than groundhogs.   We doubt these spikes would work on them either.

Groundhogs/Woodchucks aren’t repelled with sonic devices.  Please don’t waste your time or money.

If you do want to get rid of a groundhog problem, however, we highly recommend trapping them.

Groundhogs can be trapped and Frontline Animal Removal has the experience to do it efficiently.  If you are in our area nd need some education or trapping services, give us a call.
